According to Bild, the Premier League club have tabled a €12m offer for the Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper as they continue planning for life beyond Nick Pope as their first-choice option.
That figure tells you two things straight away. First, Newcastle clearly see Nicolas as more than a squad option. Second, Gladbach are not under pressure to sell at that price.
The German club hold a strong position, with the 28-year-old under contract until 2029 and a previous release clause no longer in play after expiring on July 1.
Bild’s report suggests Newcastle have made their move, but €12m will not be enough to complete a deal. Gladbach director Rouven Schröder reportedly wants at least €15m before negotiations become serious.
The gap is not huge in modern football terms, but it shows the transfer remains at the early stage rather than being close to completion.
Schröder has made the club’s stance clear, saying: “We will certainly be holding further talks with players who are due to leave us. But Mo is an integral part of our plans for the new season!”
That remains the official position. Gladbach have a starting goalkeeper under contract and are in no rush to sell.
However, Schröder also left the door open by adding: “The transfer window is still open for a long time yet; you can’t rule anything out.”
Newcastle had previously considered Alexander Nübel, but that option has faded with his expected move to Beşiktaş. Nicolas has now emerged as the main target, with the Magpies continuing their search for a long-term solution between the posts.
The club have already signed Ewen Jaouen, but the young goalkeeper is viewed as a player for the future rather than an immediate replacement for Nick Pope.
From Newcastle’s perspective, this move is interesting because it shows the club are focusing on smart recruitment rather than simply chasing big names.
Moritz Nicolas may not be the type of signing that creates huge headlines, but he could represent the kind of calculated move needed for long-term success. Recruitment is about finding the right player at the right time and at the right value.
If Newcastle genuinely believe Nicolas can become their future number one, then this would be a significant decision. Nick Pope has been an important figure at St James’ Park, but injuries and concerns over distribution have created questions around the position.
If Eddie Howe wants a goalkeeper capable of giving his defence a different platform, the reasoning behind targeting Nicolas is understandable.
The reported fee is also important. Around €15m for a potential first-choice goalkeeper in today’s market is not unreasonable if Newcastle’s scouting department are convinced of his ability.
The biggest question is whether Nicolas can help Newcastle return to European football and compete consistently at the highest level.
The positive sign from this report is that Newcastle appear to have a clear plan. After missing out on one option, they have quickly identified another target and are attempting to complete a deal without immediately overpaying.
If Gladbach refuse to lower their demands, Newcastle will have to decide whether Nicolas is truly their next number one or simply another name on their summer shortlist.
