The transfer is expected to be finalised soon, with Steur set to sign a long-term contract that will keep him at St James’ Park until 2031.
The Magpies have agreed a deal worth around £23 million, including add-ons, with Ajax for one of the Netherlands’ brightest young talents. Steur is expected to become Newcastle’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and winger Bazoumana Toure, as the club continues its strategy of investing in exciting young players with significant long-term potential.
Newcastle’s summer transfer activity has accelerated over the past week following the departure of Sandro Tonali. As part of the agreement, Ajax have negotiated a 12.5% sell-on clause on any future profit Newcastle make should Steur be sold later in his career. The clause reflects the Dutch club’s belief that the teenager’s value could rise significantly if he fulfils his enormous potential in the Premier League.
Newcastle have increasingly focused on signing young, high-ceiling talent capable of developing into elite players while also protecting the club’s long-term financial position. The club have previously experienced the downside of missing out on future profits after failing to include a sell-on clause in Elliot Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Bruno Guimarães also has a sell-on clause in his contract that would see former club Lyon receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should Newcastle eventually sell the Brazilian midfielder.
