Newcastle United Confirm Potential Summer Exits as These Players, Including One of Eddie Howe’s Trusted Stars, Are Made Available for Transfer

Newcastle United have eight senior players entering the final year of their contracts at St James’ Park, with at least four expected to be made available for transfer this summer.

After allowing experienced players Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth to leave when their contracts expired last month, the Magpies are keen to avoid losing more players for free in 2027. As a result, the club will consider offers for several players now entering the final 12 months of their deals.

Fabian Schär

Fabian Schär recently signed a one-year contract extension and is preparing for his ninth season at Newcastle. Signed from Deportivo La Coruña for just £3 million in 2018, the Swiss defender has become one of the club’s best-value signings in recent history.

After recovering from injuries that kept him sidelined since January, Schär is expected to play an important role this season. However, with the defender turning 35 in December, his latest extension is widely expected to be his final contract at Newcastle.

Dan Burn

Dan Burn is also entering the final year of his deal but remains an important figure under Eddie Howe.

The defender hopes to bounce back from a difficult 2025/26 campaign after impressing with England during the World Cup. Burn has publicly stated that he wants to finish his career at Newcastle, making a summer exit highly unlikely.

However, at 34 years old, a long-term extension appears unlikely.

Mark Gillespie

Mark Gillespie’s situation has become something of a tradition at Newcastle.

The experienced goalkeeper is expected to receive another one-year contract despite rarely featuring, with the club valuing his leadership and influence behind the scenes.

Jacob Murphy

Jacob Murphy signed an improved contract last summer to reflect his role within Newcastle’s leadership group. However, the deal did not include an extension, meaning his contract still expires in June 2027.

Although he couldn’t replicate his previous campaign last season, Murphy remains a strong option on the right wing, particularly after Anthony Elanga’s inconsistent performances.

Newcastle are not expected to sell Murphy unless they first secure a suitable replacement, though his long-term future remains uncertain.

Joe Willock

Joe Willock is one of the players Newcastle are prepared to listen to offers for this summer.

Now 26, the midfielder still has significant Premier League and Champions League experience, meaning Newcastle could receive a respectable transfer fee before his contract expires.

With Sandro Tonali having departed and uncertainty surrounding Bruno Guimarães, opportunities remain in midfield. However, Newcastle are actively looking to strengthen that area.

If the right offer arrives, the club are expected to sanction Willock’s departure.

Nick Pope

Nick Pope has entered the final year of his contract and is available for transfer this summer.

The 34-year-old has attracted interest from boyhood club Ipswich Town, along with several other Premier League sides.

Any sale would depend on Newcastle first bringing in another goalkeeper, with Ewen Jaouen having already arrived to replace the departing Aaron Ramsdale.

Joe White

Academy graduate Joe White appears set to leave the club permanently.

The midfielder has made four senior appearances but, now approaching 24, is in need of a fresh start following an unsuccessful loan spell at Bradford City.

Harrison Ashby

Harrison Ashby is also expected to leave.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from West Ham United in 2023 alongside Anthony Gordon but has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Magpies.

Loan spells at Swansea City, Queens Park Rangers and Bradford have failed to earn him a place in Eddie Howe’s plans, making a permanent exit this summer the most likely outcome.

While several players are entering the final year of their contracts, Newcastle’s immediate focus is elsewhere.

The club’s priority is securing the long-term futures of key players, particularly Bruno Guimarães, whose current deal runs until 2028 with an option to extend for another year.

Tino Livramento, who has two years remaining on his contract, is also among the players sporting director Ross Wilson is expected to prioritise for a new deal.
