Eddie Howe Told 7 First-Team Players Could Be Moved On as Newcastle Prepare for Summer Rebuild

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is facing a difficult summer as he looks to rebuild his squad while working under financial restrictions.

Howe’s future has come under scrutiny after Newcastle endured a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. The Magpies finished 13th in the Premier League, although they reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.

Several key players have already been linked with moves away from St James’ Park this summer, while Anthony Gordon has completed a transfer to Barcelona.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Newcastle need a major squad overhaul but warned that financial regulations could prevent the club from making all the changes they need.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said:

> “I wrote down the Newcastle team, and there wasn’t one player where there weren’t questions over them.

> “At right-back, the captain has gone. Tino Livramento has had injury problems and there’s talk about him leaving. Dan Burn is now 34, Sven Botman has struggled with injuries, and it’s unclear where he stands.



> “Harvey Barnes comes into the team, performs well, then drops out again and there’s speculation about his future.



> “They’re not happy with Woltemade because he hasn’t delivered as expected. There are also concerns about Wissa.



> “When you go through the whole team, it almost looks like they need a completely new starting eleven.



> “This is a squad built by the richest owners in the world, but financial constraints have done Newcastle no favours.

> “It’s not just about adding one or two players. Eddie Howe has a huge rebuilding job on his hands.


> “Joelinton also missed much of the second half of the season through injury. Every position in the team has question marks, and when that’s the case, you’ve got major problems.”

Despite the disappointing season, Newcastle’s owners have continued to back Howe heading into the transfer window. However, the club have already missed out on one of their top targets after Victor Muñoz chose to join Liverpool.

Howe still has goodwill from his previous successes on Tyneside, but reports suggest that his position could come under serious pressure if Newcastle make another poor start to the new season.

With uncertainty surrounding several first-team players, the upcoming transfer window is expected to be crucial for both Howe and Newcastle’s long-term project.
