While these developments could provide Eddie Howe with substantial funds to reinvest, Newcastle must ensure they execute their transfer plans effectively.
Last summer saw the Magpies endure a difficult window, missing out on several key targets and ultimately being forced to pursue alternative options. Unfortunately, a similar pattern appears to be emerging this summer, with reports suggesting Newcastle have once again lost ground in the race for one of their priority targets.
As a result, the club have been forced to reassess their transfer strategy, with growing frustration at St James’ Park over the number of transfer pursuits that have slipped away.
According to reports, Newcastle have made a move for Udinese midfielder Arthur Atta while also stepping up efforts to secure a key defensive target before Bayer Leverkusen can disrupt their plans.
Newcastle accelerate talks to sign defender
This time, the Magpies are determined not to miss out. According to TeamTalk, Newcastle have reopened talks to sign Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie.
Newcastle were previously considered to be in a strong position to sign the highly-rated 20-year-old, having tracked him since January. However, their pursuit has become more complicated following the emergence of Bayer Leverkusen.
The Bundesliga club’s interest has reportedly intensified following the appointment of former Toulouse coach Carles Martínez Novell, who played an important role in Methalie’s development and is keen on a reunion.
Nevertheless, Newcastle are pushing ahead with their own plans and have now accelerated discussions in an attempt to avoid another transfer setback.
The potential arrival of Methalie would provide Eddie Howe with additional depth at left-back and further strengthen Newcastle’s defensive options ahead of the new season.
What other players could Newcastle target?
Methalie may not be the only addition Newcastle pursue this summer. The Magpies have also been linked with moves for James Trafford and Folarin Balogun as part of what could be a significant squad rebuild.
With additional financial flexibility available, Newcastle will hope to reshape Howe’s squad into one capable of competing consistently at the highest level, while reducing their reliance on a small number of key individuals.
