adminNewcastle United will be “rubbing their hands” after selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69 million.
That is the view of former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, who believes Newcastle have done excellent business despite Gordon attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in world football.
Gordon spent three-and-a-half years at Newcastle after joining from Everton in January 2023 for £45 million. During his time at St James’ Park, he scored 39 goals and provided 28 assists in 152 appearances before completing a move to Barcelona ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old had looked set to join Bayern Munich before Barcelona moved quickly to secure his signature. However, Jordan admits he has doubts about whether Gordon is worth the fee paid by the Spanish giants.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Jordan said:
“Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? Because you’ve got two of the biggest clubs in the world looking at him. Their coaches are seeing something in him. The England manager sees something in him, so I’m in your camp.
“I look at him, I think he had a decent first half against Ghana. But I look at him and say, ‘how is that a £70 million footballer?’ And Newcastle must be rubbing their hands.
“But Barcelona and Bayern are not fools. These are not fools.”
Gordon has started both of England’s World Cup group matches against Croatia and Ghana, but there are growing suggestions he could be dropped for Saturday’s final Group L fixture against Panama.
England know that a victory would secure top spot in the group and, on paper, provide a more favourable route into the Round of 32.
Despite the criticism, Gordon remains highly rated by both club and country, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich both viewing him as a player capable of performing at the highest level for years to come.
