Abdulhafiz TeslimNewcastle United legend Alan Shearer has shared his thoughts on the growing speculation linking midfielder Sandro Tonali with a surprise move away from St James’ Park, insisting that he would be shocked if the Italian international chose Tottenham Hotspur as his next destination.
Rumours surrounding Tonali’s future have continued to circulate in recent weeks, with Tottenham reportedly among the clubs monitoring the situation. While no official approach has been confirmed, the speculation has sparked widespread debate among Newcastle supporters, especially given Tonali’s importance to Eddie Howe’s squad.
Speaking about the reports, Shearer admitted that he finds the suggested move difficult to understand from a footballing perspective. Although he acknowledged that London and the opportunity to work under Tottenham’s new manager could appeal to the Italian, he questioned why a player of Tonali’s quality would choose a club that has endured disappointing league campaigns in recent seasons.
Shearer pointed out that Tottenham narrowly avoided an even worse campaign and believes Newcastle remain the stronger sporting project despite the transfer rumours. In his view, a move to North London would represent a surprising career decision for a player who has become one of Newcastle’s most influential midfielders.
The former Magpies captain also addressed the possibility that Tonali may genuinely want to leave the club. Rather than trying to persuade an unhappy player to stay, Shearer believes Newcastle should stand firm and demand a fee well in excess of £100 million before allowing any deal to happen.
According to Shearer, if another club is prepared to meet such a valuation, Newcastle should accept the offer and immediately reinvest the money into strengthening the squad. He stressed that the club should never keep a player who no longer wants to be part of the project.
Shearer said:
«”Tottenham just avoided relegation. I get the attraction of London but going to Spurs who have finished so low over the last two years would be a surprise career move for Tonali in my eyes. But I’m not surprised if it’s true that he’s made an indication that he wants to leave Newcastle.»
«Again, if he doesn’t want to be there, you put the price you want and if someone wants to pay it, and it looks as if it’ll have to be three figures, then you say thank you very much, get the £100million plus and you move on. I know Spurs have a new manager and that may be a pull for him, London obviously. But in terms of the football club, look where they have finished the last two years.”»
Tonali has grown into one of Newcastle’s standout performers since overcoming a difficult first season that included a lengthy suspension. His composure, passing range, defensive work, and leadership have made him a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield, with many supporters viewing him as one of the club’s most important long-term assets.
At this stage, there has been no official confirmation from Newcastle or Tottenham regarding the reported interest, and Tonali remains under contract at St James’ Park. Unless a club is willing to meet Newcastle’s expected valuation, any potential transfer appears difficult to complete.
For now, the speculation continues, but Shearer’s message is clear: if Tonali is fully committed to Newcastle, the club should do everything possible to keep him. However, if the midfielder genuinely wants a new challenge, Newcastle should ensure they receive a record-breaking fee before allowing one of their biggest stars to depart.
