The Magpies have already begun reshaping their squad during the summer transfer window, with significant funds becoming available after fan favourite Anthony Gordon completed a blockbuster £69.3 million move to Barcelona.
Newcastle’s recruitment team has since accelerated efforts to bring in young talent capable of leading the club back into European contention.
Several deals have already been completed, including the arrivals of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims and winger Johan Martínez from Independiente del Valle. However, the club has also faced frustration in the market after missing out on a number of key targets.
One of those targets was Victor Munoz, who is now on the verge of becoming Liverpool’s first signing of the Andoni Iraola era after the Reds hijacked Newcastle United’s pursuit of the highly-rated winger.
The Osasuna star is currently away with Spain at the World Cup and is expected to complete his move to Anfield after Liverpool triggered his release clause, believed to be worth around £35 million.
It marks the second time in the past 12 months that Liverpool have beaten Newcastle to a major transfer target, having also secured the signing of Hugo Ekitike ahead of the Magpies last summer.
Munoz began his career in Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy before moving to Real Madrid, where he made four senior appearances during the 2024/25 season.
The winger joined Osasuna last summer and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important players, scoring seven goals in 36 appearances across all competitions as they narrowly avoided relegation from La Liga.
His impressive performances earned him a first senior call-up to the Spain national team in March, and he marked his debut with a goal in a friendly victory over Serbia.
Munoz was later included in Spain’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, although he did not feature in either the warm-up matches or their opening game against Cape Verde.
Despite missing out on Munoz, Newcastle remain active in the transfer market and are expected to pursue alternative targets as Ross Wilson and Eddie Howe continue their efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
