Alexander Isak’s departure from Newcastle United last summer did not go down well with both the board and fans due to the controversy surrounding his push to leave Tyneside.

The Swedish No.9 had a brilliant spell at Newcastle United, but when Liverpool came knocking, it was a move many felt he could not refuse. However, Newcastle were not ready to sell, especially after qualifying for the Champions League.

Despite this, Isak reportedly pushed for a move and eventually secured a club-record £130 million transfer to Liverpool. Newcastle quickly responded by signing two strikers, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, for £69 million and £55 million respectively.

However, both signings have failed to deliver as expected, struggling to match Isak’s goalscoring output, leaving the Magpies frustrated and disappointed.

According to reports, Newcastle United are now targeting AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun as a potential return to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old forward scored twice for the United States as they defeated Paraguay 4-1 in their World Cup opener on Saturday.

The brace came after Damian Bobadilla’s early own goal, with Mauricio pulling one back for Paraguay before Giovanni Reyna sealed the win with a stunning strike.

The United States now face Australia and Turkey as they continue their World Cup campaign.

Newcastle are believed to be considering a move for Balogun this summer, with his contract at AS Monaco running until 2028.

The former Arsenal striker scored 19 goals in all competitions this season, including an impressive run of 11 goals in 12 consecutive matches between February and April.

If the deal happens, Newcastle could allow one of their current strikers to leave, with Yoane Wissa reportedly the most likely due to injuries that disrupted his season.

Newcastle are not alone in the race for Balogun, with several clubs also monitoring his situation following his standout performance against Paraguay.

Balogun initially struggled after his 2023 move from Arsenal to Monaco and missed most of last season due to a shoulder injury.

However, this season has been a strong reminder of his quality, as he continues to impress on the biggest stage.

He thought he had scored earlier in the match, but the goal was ruled out for offside. He later opened the scoring just minutes after, calmly finishing to double the United States’ lead.

His second goal was even more impressive, as he ran onto a through ball, beat two defenders, and fired a powerful strike into the top corner.

The forward also contributed beyond goals, completing a dribble, winning five duels, and being fouled four times.

Balogun came through Arsenal’s youth system and even scored twice for the senior team before moving on. Arsenal later sold him to AS Monaco for £35 million, a deal that included a sell-on clause.

When asked in May about a possible return to England, Balogun said he was focused on his current club and the World Cup, adding that he would see what happens after the tournament, with no confirmed plans about his future.
