Abdulhafiz TeslimSpeaking in his first major interview since joining Newcastle United, 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has revealed how conversations with Eddie Howe played a key role in convincing him to make the move to Tyneside.
The young Frenchman spoke highly of Howe’s commitment to player development and communication, explaining that the Newcastle boss made him feel valued even before the deal was completed.
“I’m really excited to work with Eddie Howe,” Jaouen said. “I spoke with him on the phone a few times, and he told me he was willing to help develop me, talk to me, and pay close attention to my progress.
“So, hearing that from the coach was a big part of my decision. It made me feel at home, even before I had signed.”
Jaouen is hoping to learn from Howe, Newcastle’s coaching staff, and the club’s experienced goalkeepers as he adapts to the demands of English football.
“I hope he can give me Premier League experience from the toughest league in the world, and I also want to learn from the other goalkeepers at the club and the coaching staff. Experience is the most important thing I can take from him.”
While Eddie Howe may no longer be solely responsible for Newcastle’s transfer business, the manager clearly remains heavily involved in recruitment decisions.
Some supporters have questioned Howe’s role following last summer’s difficult transfer window. However, the absence of a sporting director and chief executive at the time also played a significant part in those challenges.
Those issues have since been addressed with the arrivals of David Hopkinson as CEO and Ross Wilson as sporting director. Yet Jaouen’s comments suggest Howe continues to have a strong influence on incoming transfers.
Speaking to Newcastle’s official media team, Jaouen confirmed that he spoke directly with Howe before agreeing to join the club. Given Howe’s reputation for developing young players, those conversations proved crucial in convincing the goalkeeper that Newcastle was the right destination for his next step.
Based on Jaouen’s remarks, it is clear the move had Howe’s full backing, challenging previous suggestions that Newcastle’s overseas recruits are not genuine “Howe signings.”
