Everton’s promising teenager Omari Benjamin received high praise from Under-21s coach Paul Tait following his impressive performances against against cross-town rivals Liverpool Under-21s on 26 October.

The 18-year-old forward netted both goals in a 2-0 victory, securing a win in the mini-Merseyside derby.

While the headlines will focus on his goal-scoring and explosive attacking prowess, Tait emphasized that Benjamin’s work rate was the standout aspect of his performance.

“He will grab the headlines, the two goals are really good for him. Playing as a nine through the middle for us, his work rate again was outstanding and he got his rewards,” Tait said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo (28 October).

Tait further emphasized on Benjamin’s overall contribution, stating, “His work rate and out of possession stuff is very good in terms of what we demand.

He is not just a winger who is allowed to stand up there.” His commitment to both attacking and defensive duties demonstrates a player who is evolving in his role as speedy and technical winger.

In terms of tactical adjustments, Tait noted, “He tracks his full-back and he does that really diligently but we said at half-time we wanted to try and get him in the game a bit more because we couldn’t get him in the game, we couldn’t get him down the left much, so we tweaked it a little bit and got him more on the ball and it worked.”

After the bright performance, Benjamin could soon be in line for a senior call-up.

His ability to combine scoring with a tiredless work ethic makes him an attractive option for first team manager Sean Dyche, who prioritizes players that contribute defensively as well rather than slacking.

If Benjamin continues to impress, it’s likely he could join the first team for training and potentially earn appearances in senior matches as the week progresses.
