The home side appeared reluctantly to secure their first 3 points of the campaign with Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo putting Russell Martin’s men ahead by two goals within the first hour of the game. The atmosphere at the St Mary’s Stadium was electrifying, a moment of joy for the home fans.
However, that joy quickly turns to frustration as the second half began with Facundo Buonanotte’s goal in the 64th minute sparked a turnaround for the away team, the game took a twist for the worse when Ryan fraser received a straight red card after pulling Vardy down in the penalty box. The situation prove critical for the home team as Jamie Vardy calmly converted the penalty awarded
That was not enough, Jordan Ayew score a stoppage time winner to give Leicester city much needed maximum points and an emphatic comeback and leaving Southampton bitting their fingers.
Fraser’s reckless challenge not only spoiled the momentum of the team but also the team has a penalty overruled that could have secured comfortable victory for the team.
The game could have shifted Southampton’s fortunes, all hopes laid on Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu in the 68th minute when he was brought in to replace Archer, Onuachu’s introduction was anticipated, especially after Saints legend Francis Benali expressed surprise at his earlier performance against Arsenal, where he made his appearance of the season from the bench.
The defeat against Leicester proved the ongoing struggles for the saints who must find a way to regroup and change their approach as they continue battling to stay afloat during the challenging campaign.
