John Wenham, owner of the popular Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, expressed his frustration over the highly-rated 19-year-old’s limited game time this season at championship side stoke city.
Phillips has made just two appearances in possible 12 matches in the Championship since his loan move in August, spendin most of time on the bench.
Wenham, in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, highlighted the clear difference between Phillips’ time with his club and his performances for the England Under-20 team. “For Phillips, it was another disappointing weekend,” Wenham remarked.
After starting his first Championship match in Stoke’s 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle on 31 August, Phillips has struggled to secure a place in the team for the potters.
His only other appearance came last weekend, where he experienced another heartbroken outcome as Stoke fell 2-0 away at Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
Wenham voiced his concerns, stating, “He has spent a lot of time on the bench this season. However, when he went away with the England Under-20s, he played every game for them.
Therefore, it is concerning that he isn’t starting regularly for Stoke at the moment.” This lack of first-team football could have implications for Phillips’ development, especially with speculation surrounding a possible Premier League loan move next season for the highly-rated defender.
Ange Postecoglou, in his second season at The North London club, must now work on the situation. With a number of promising young defenders in his squad, the Spurs manager will be eager to see Phillips regain his form and secure more minutes on the pitch.
