Newcastle United supporters have been given another reason to look back on the club’s recent victory with a smile after a number of key moments from the match were placed under fresh scrutiny.
The game had already produced plenty of talking points, with Tottenham questioning several decisions during the contest. While Newcastle eventually walked away with all three points, there remained debate among supporters over whether some of the biggest moments could have gone differently.
Now, those incidents have been reviewed by the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel.
The independent panel was established to assess major refereeing and VAR decisions in Premier League matches. It is made up of five members, including former players and coaches alongside representatives connected to the Premier League and PGMOL.
And this particular review covered four separate incidents from Newcastle’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham.
The first major moment came shortly after half-time when Tottenham appealed for a penalty following an incident involving Omar Marmoush and Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw.
There were appeals from the home side, but the referee decided against awarding a spot-kick.
That decision has now received support from the panel, although it was not completely unanimous. Four members agreed that no penalty should have been awarded, while one disagreed.
However, there was no disagreement whatsoever when it came to VAR’s decision not to intervene. That received a unanimous 5-0 backing.
Attention then moved to Newcastle’s opening goal.
Tottenham had questioned whether Amar Dedić was in an offside position during the build-up. Nico González delivered the ball forward before Dedić’s involvement eventually helped create the opportunity for Anthony Elanga to find the net.
This time, the panel had no doubts.
The decision to allow Newcastle’s goal was unanimously supported, with all five members agreeing that Dedić was onside.
VAR’s decision was also given a full 5-0 backing.
But the review did not stop there.
Newcastle’s second goal was also examined after Tottenham raised another offside question, this time concerning Yoane Wissa.
Again, the panel found no error.
The goal was judged to have been correctly awarded, receiving another unanimous 5-0 verdict. VAR was also fully backed for allowing the decision to stand.
Then came the incident that could have created even more controversy.
Late in the match, the ball struck Sven Botman’s arm inside the Newcastle penalty area, leading to further Tottenham appeals for a penalty.
Yet once again, the panel sided with the officials.
All five members agreed that the incident should not have resulted in a penalty, with Botman’s arm considered to have been in an expected position.
VAR’s decision not to intervene was also unanimously supported.
That leaves Newcastle with a remarkably positive outcome from the independent review.
All four refereeing decisions examined were ultimately judged to have been correct, while every corresponding VAR decision was also backed.
For Newcastle supporters, the verdict provides significant confirmation following a match in which several decisions had been questioned.
What initially looked like another potential source of controversy has now turned into a major vote of confidence in the officials’ performance — and Newcastle have emerged from the entire review without a single one of the four decisions being overturned.
The result will certainly strengthen the feeling around the 2-0 victory and give Matthias Jaissle and his players even more satisfaction from what was already an important result.
