Newcastle United have wasted no time preparing for life after one of their biggest stars, with the club now accelerating plans to bring in a new midfield leader before the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Following the departure of Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal in a deal worth around £75 million, the Magpies are actively searching for a high-quality replacement. The Brazilian international has already been granted permission to undergo his medical, bringing an end to his hugely successful spell at St James’ Park.
The move comes just weeks after Sandro Tonali also left Newcastle for Tottenham Hotspur, meaning new manager Matthias Jaissle has suddenly lost two of the club’s most influential midfielders ahead of the new campaign.
Newcastle have already strengthened their midfield by signing promising youngsters Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, but those arrivals are viewed as investments for the future rather than immediate replacements. The club is therefore expected to make another major signing before the transfer window closes.
Several midfielders have been linked with the Magpies in recent weeks, including Angelo Stiller, Felix Nmecha and Victor Froholdt. However, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has now emerged as one of the strongest names under consideration.
The Swedish international has attracted interest from multiple Premier League clubs after reports suggested he could find first-team opportunities limited following Tottenham’s summer recruitment. Bergvall has previously earned praise from former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who described the young midfielder as “incredible,” and Newcastle have reportedly admired his qualities for some time.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Newcastle are actively working behind the scenes to secure a new midfielder, although no final decision has yet been made regarding their preferred target.
According to Romano, discussions are ongoing between the club’s hierarchy and Matthias Jaissle to determine exactly what type of midfielder is needed before they launch their next move in the transfer market.
Romano explained that Newcastle will continue internal meetings over the coming days before deciding which player best fits the manager’s tactical plans. He also stressed that signing a top-quality midfielder is now a priority following Guimaraes’ departure.
Although Bergvall remains one of the leading candidates, Newcastle are understood to have several options on their shortlist as they assess the market.
The Magpies are also looking beyond midfield as they continue reshaping the squad. After scoring just 53 Premier League goals last season, improving the team’s attacking output has become another key objective.
Bazoumana Toure has already arrived to strengthen the forward line following Anthony Gordon’s exit, but Newcastle may not stop there. Bilal El Khannouss has also been linked with a move to St James’ Park after impressing during his previous spell in the Premier League, although competition from several English clubs could make any deal more complicated.
With the new Premier League season now only two weeks away, Newcastle are entering a crucial period in the transfer market. Supporters can expect plenty of movement as the club looks to rebuild its midfield, add more creativity, and ensure Matthias Jaissle has a squad capable of challenging much higher up the table.
